Rhubard Theatre Company – What a Waste

Hull City Council has commissioned the Rhubarb Theatre Company to explore issues around smoking using drama, art, music and dance with Year 6 students at Biggin Hill Primary.

Four professional artists came to the school and each took groups of Year 6 pupils throughout the morning. Each session concentrated on an area of performance (i.e. scene or props for the scene) focusing on issues around tobacco and smoking.

Here is the synopsis for the performance – Meet Toni, a local school child. Toni takes us through her neighbourhood introducing us to the families that live down the street. Each family is affected by smoking in some way. Her journey helps her learn about the affects of smoking. By the time she reaches her own house, she understands the importance of not smoking.

In the afternoon the children brought their learning and completed scenes together to rehearse a final ‘informal’ piece that was then performed to the younger KS2 children.

The children all really enjoyed their day and learned a lot regarding the issues around smoking.
