Primary maths is taught throughout our school, starting with counting and investigating numbers in the nursery. We believe that a high-quality maths education provides a foundation for understanding the world around us, the ability to reason and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Each year group follows a detailed programme of study, building on previous learning in order to increase understanding and the ability to apply concepts when solving problems.
At Biggin Hill Academy, we aim to:
- Ensure that all pupils become fluent in their basic skills of calculation, recall of facts and times tables. The whole school uses Big Maths to help the children to achieve this.
- Ensure that children can reason mathematically, explaining their answers using mathematical links and language.
- Ensure that children can solve problems by applying their maths in a variety of situations, including multi-step problems.
To further encourage our children’s mathematical enjoyment and understanding, we also link maths to our topic studies wherever possible.
