Our design and technology curriculum is fully inclusive and meets the needs of all learners, starting from building strong foundations in our EYFS, supporting and challenging them on their journey to being secondary ready, and ultimately ensuring that they are equipped with the cultural capital, skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future.

Intent

Our vision for design and technology is ‘to ensure that pupils  develop creative, technical and practical skills to perform everyday tasks confidently.’ We aim to enable them to build and apply a good knowledge of how to design and make products for all different kinds of audiences.

Children need to have the ability to follow the three stage process of design, make and evaluate with confidence.  In addition to this, understand nutrition and how to make basic products such as buns, fruit kebabs and bread etc.

We believe that a broad and balanced design and technology education is the entitlement of all pupils, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability. It is our vision that all pupils during their journey will display the essential characteristics of designers:

  • Significant levels of originality and the willingness to take creative risks to produce innovative ideas and prototypes
  • An excellent attitude to learning and independent working
  • The ability to use time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others
  • The ability to carry out thorough research, show initiative and ask questions to develop an exceptionally detailed knowledge of users’ needs
  • The ability to act as responsible designers and makers, working ethically, using finite materials carefully and working safely
  • A thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products
  • The ability to apply mathematical knowledge
  • The ability to manage risks exceptionally well to manufacture products safely and hygienically
  • A passion for the subject and knowledge of up- to- date technological innovations in materials, products and systems.

Implementation

From the beginnings of design and technology teaching in our EYFS, we endeavor to instill a sense of creativity in our pupils, allowing their understanding to develop through organised play in a creative area. They safely use and explore a variety of media, materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

The teaching of design and technology at Biggin Hill Primary Academy is carefully designed, planned and implemented to ensure that all pupils are challenged to fulfil their potential. Design and technology lessons are rich in resources, vocabulary, questioning and content enabling them to develop mastery of the aims of the National Curriculum. Weekly design and technology lessons are further enhanced by our annual subject specific focus weeks when the whole week is dedicated to master practical skills, deign, make, evaluate and improve.

Wherever possible subjects are incorporated through a thematic approach which ensures children are thoroughly engaged and enriched. However, there are occasions when subjects are taught discretely in order to give depth and breadth to the curriculum area.

Design and Technology National Curriculum Aims

In line with the Design and Technology Programmes of Study in KS1 and KS2 the school aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform the everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

The impact of the design and technology curriculum is measured through regular book scrutinies, subject specific learning walks, teacher and pupil discussions and data analysis. The school leadership team, subject leaders and governors relentlessly drive the design and technology curriculum forward and monitor it vigorously.
